Tung and I were driving back from watching a solar eclipse in Ely, Nevada, planning to drive all the way home to home in the SF Bay Area that evening. On our way back, we stopped for lunch in... well, the middle of nowhere, on the "loneliest highway in America"! It was tasty but took forever. As we approached Lake Tahoe and Donner Pass, we noticed amazing clouds forming over the crest. Caught a bit off guard (a rarity as a meteorologist!), we pulled over and started to hike up a mountain, soon realizing the scenes we were finding weren't really the kind of thing we were hoping for. We ran down the mountain, drove to somewhere else to try, and ended up getting some decent photos... and wishing we had spent more time here instead of at lunch.
Shortly after, my sunrise model ran, and confirmed that there would likely be a nice sunrise the following morning. I said, nope, we ain't goin' home tonight -- this is my chance for redemption. So we called our dogsitter and said we'll need one more night, found a campground near the lake, pitched our tent, woke up at 5am, and I hiked up 2000' to this summit to catch this lovely sunrise over several of the lakes and bays of the southern Tahoe basin. And THEN, only then, could we finish the drive home!
